Chase Tower

The Life List

Chase Tower is the Chicago office setting for Brett Bohlinger’s confrontation with Catherine Humphries-Bohlinger after the succession of Bohlinger Cosmetics. The company’s forty-ninth-floor headquarters, and especially the corner office once associated with Elizabeth Bohlinger, turns a private family loss into a visible change in corporate power.

Setting and Corporate Role

Brett crosses the marble lobby and rides the elevator to the forty-ninth floor, reaching the headquarters through double glass doors. She heads directly to Catherine’s office, moving through a workplace where she had expected to take on greater responsibility. The location is therefore not merely an office backdrop: it is where Brett discovers what the changed succession means for her position in the family business.

The Changed Office

The corner office had belonged to Elizabeth Bohlinger. Catherine now sits behind its desk, and the room’s arrangement records the transition: the paintings and sculptures Elizabeth loved are gone, replaced by Catherine’s bookcase and framed awards. The cityscape remains, but Elizabeth’s nameplate has been replaced with one bearing Catherine’s name and the title President. Brett notices the brass-and-marble plaque and recognizes that the transfer she had not expected has already been made tangible in the room.

Confrontation and Consequence

Catherine receives Brett while handling a call with Tokyo, explaining that the fourteen-hour time difference requires her to be at work before dawn. Brett responds to the newly installed nameplate with sarcasm, then challenges Catherine over the promise that she would become CEO and the effort she had put into learning the business. She says that she has lost both her mother and the company, while Catherine has inherited the fortune and business. Catherine explains that she had assumed Elizabeth’s shares would go to Brett and had groomed her on that assumption, but had not consulted Elizabeth. The conversation ends with Catherine telling Brett she is fired. At Chase Tower, the altered office and the dismissal make the change in authority immediate: Brett leaves the headquarters without the role she had prepared to assume.
